The mistake I watch people make every summer on Mykonos is simple: they land, walk out to the taxi rank, and expect a queue of cabs. There isn’t one. The whole island runs on roughly 35 licensed taxis, and in July and August they are all already booked. People stand outside arrivals for 40 minutes in the heat with their luggage, then pay a premium anyway. Don’t be that person.

Here is the direct answer. Mykonos airport (JMK) is only about 4 km from Mykonos Town and 5 to 10 minutes from the west-coast beaches, so every journey is short. If you have light bags and time, the KTEL bus costs €1 to €3. If you have luggage, a family, a tight ferry connection or you land at night, pre-book a private transfer before you fly. Do not gamble on finding a taxi on arrival.

How far is Mykonos airport from town and the beaches?

Everything on Mykonos is close, which is the good news. The airport sits 4 km southeast of Chora (Mykonos Town), and the popular west-coast beaches are practically next door.

• Mykonos Town (Chora): about 10 minutes by car
• Ornos, Platis Gialos, Psarou, Agios Ioannis: 5 to 10 minutes
• New Port (Tourlos): 5.9 km, roughly 14 minutes by car, 20 to 25 minutes by bus
• Paradise and Super Paradise: reached via the Fabrika bus station in town
• Elia, Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis, Panormos (east and north): 15 to 25 minutes, served by local buses from town

The single terminal has had a €25 million upgrade running through 2021 to 2026, growing to roughly 13,350 m² with a larger arrivals hall, 16 check-in counters, seven gates and five security lanes. A seasonal luxury lounge runs 1 May to 15 October. Fraport’s runway reconstruction has been ongoing since late 2025, so on some days you may notice airfield works, but it does not affect your transfer.

What are the transfer options from the airport?

You have four realistic ways to reach your hotel, and the right one depends entirely on how much luggage you have and what time you land.

KTEL bus (cheapest)

The public KTEL bus runs two routes from the airport: to the Fabrika (South) station in town and, less often, to the New Port. Fares are €1 to €3, paid to the driver or at the kiosk. In summer 2026 the town route runs roughly hourly from about 09:15 to 22:15. The New Port route is thinner, roughly every 1.5 hours between 09:10 and 17:50. Off-season the timetable is cut back hard, so always check the day’s schedule on the KTEL Mykonos site before you rely on it. The bus is brilliant if you have a backpack. With two large suitcases in August it is a struggle, and there is no luggage hold to speak of.

Taxi

Airport to town runs about €17 to €25 including the €2.85 airport surcharge. Airport to the New Port is around €19. Between midnight and 05:00 expect roughly €24, plus €0.40 per bag over 10 kg. Cash is preferred. The catch is supply: with only about 35 cabs island-wide, walking up to the rank in peak season often means a long wait or none at all. This is a structural shortage, not a tourist trap. Booking ahead through Aegean Taxi helps, but a private transfer is usually the calmer choice.

Private transfer (my default for luggage or night arrivals)

This is what I book when I land after dark or when I have the family and bags. A driver waits at arrivals with a sign, helps with the luggage, and you are at the door of your hotel in ten minutes with no queue and no cash haggling. A private car typically runs €25 to €35 to town, a bit more to the far beaches, and shared shuttles start lower per person, from around £12. Most operators offer free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.

Book it before you fly so a car is guaranteed on the day you arrive, not left to the 35-taxi lottery.

If you plan to reach the quieter northern and eastern beaches like Agios Sostis, Fokos or Kalo Livadi on your own schedule, a car earns its keep. Roads are short and easy, though summer parking near Chora is a headache, so many people park outside and walk in. Compare prices early because the island’s fleet sells out in high season.

Arriving by ferry: New Port or Old Port?

Nearly every scheduled ferry to and from Piraeus, Rafina, Santorini, Paros, Naxos and Tinos now uses the New Port at Tourlos, about 2.5 km north of Chora and 4 km from the airport. It has proper terminals, shaded seating, customs and immigration, a snack stand, dedicated parking, taxis and buses. A handful of smaller catamarans still tie up at the Old Port in Chora itself, which is prettier but tiny, with a small covered terminal and little shade in peak summer.

Always confirm which port your ticket uses, because turning up at the wrong one with a departure looming is a genuine risk. From the New Port to town you have three choices:

• Sea Bus: €2, about 10 minutes, every 30 minutes from 08:30 to 23:00. It runs straight from the New Port to the Old Port in Chora and is honestly the nicest way in.
• KTEL bus: €2 to town, but timed to ferries rather than frequent.
• Taxi or transfer: quick but subject to the same taxi scarcity as the airport.

Cruise passengers: the €20 fee and tender berths

Since May 2025 cruise visitors to Mykonos pay a €20 passenger tax (most other islands charge €5). Larger cruise ships anchor and tender passengers ashore, and a new tender berth pier was completed at the Old Port in May 2026 to make that safer. If your ship docks at Tourlos you can walk to the Sea Bus; if you tender into the Old Port you are already in Chora. Either way, do not count on grabbing a taxi at the pier for a beach run, pre-arrange it or use the bus.

How do you get to the beaches?

Mykonos beaches split into two groups, and knowing which is which saves you a lot of confusion.

The west-coast beaches (Ornos, Platis Gialos, Psarou, Agios Ioannis) are 5 to 10 minutes from the airport and easy to reach by bus, taxi or transfer. The party beaches (Paradise, Super Paradise) are served by buses from the Fabrika (South) station in town, then a short walk. The east and north beaches (Elia, Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis, Panormos, Agios Sostis) are further out and best reached by car or the seasonal local buses, which thin out sharply in the shoulder months.

My favourite trick in summer is the water taxis. These small caiques run along the south coast from roughly late May to mid-October, hopping between Ornos, Platis Gialos, Paradise and beyond. They are often faster than the road, far more scenic, and they skip the parking chaos entirely. Outside that window they stop running, so in winter and early spring the road is your only option.

The real decision on Mykonos is whether to fight for a taxi or book ahead. My rule is simple: When I land, I utilize the Aegean Taxi app or take a quick taxi or a ride to the Hotel or Villa. The honest trade off? The bus is cheap but slow and awkward with heavy bags, and the transfer costs more but puts you at the hotel door in ten minutes with zero stress. Bottomline? Book a transfer, be comfortable and enjoy the Island with no stress.

Where to stay for easy transfers

Where you base yourself changes how much you even need to worry about transport. Here is how I think about the main areas, with picks across three budget tiers.

Mykonos Town (Chora), best for first-timers and nightlife

Stay here if you want to walk to bars, restaurants, the windmills and Little Venice, and reach the Old Port and Sea Bus on foot. It is the most convenient base for anyone without a car.
